How exercise, movement and fascia care can help manage stress, trauma and overwhelm

Are you connected with how your body responds to stress, trauma and overwhelm? Licensed Clinical Social Worker Alexis Overstreet teaches us how exercise can help manage these challenges as well as providing self-care tools to deal with them.

A few months ago in September 2022 I invited Sue Hitzmann, otherwise known as Queen of the Connective Tissue (I made up that title) on the show to discuss our fascia. You all loved that episode; in fact, it was the second most downloaded episode in 2022 right behind “The Underlying Reason You’re Chronically Exhausted” (Season 13 Episode 26). Sue’s episode was entitled “The surprising connection between fascia, chronic pain and overall well being” (Season 15 Episode 3) and it continues to get a steady stream of downloads.

Through that episode and the magic of social media, I connected with Alexis Overstreet on Instagram. Alexis has this amazing feed of simple ways to create self care, and she is MELT certified, which is the program Sue Hitzmann offers through her company, MELT. Alexis uses a variety of ways to help viewers implement self care, including the MELT Soft Body Foam Roller and Mini Balls, but also shows a wide variety of other tools.

I invited Alexis on to share some of those tools and talk about the body-brain connection. If you’ve read books like The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, you are going to love this conversation.

Of course, if you’re interested in learning more about the connection between the brain and body but haven’t read it, you’ll dig it too. We discuss the benefits of integrating body awareness into therapy, the importance of understanding how stress, trauma and overwhelm  impacts us on a body level, tremors, brain spotting and more.

Alexis Overstreet is the Founder and President of Metaspace Counseling & Metaspace Wellness where she offers individual therapy sessions, coaching groups, corporate wellness, and retreats. She is a bonafide Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a passion to gift others with modern & traditional practices to heal their own bodies.  It is her JAM to encourage daily practices of self-maintenance and care – especially for post-pandemic wellness.

We discuss

  • What is connective tissue
  • The benefits of Integrating body awareness into therapy
  • The importance of understanding how stress, trauma and overwhelm impacts us on a body level
  • Various terms like brain spotting, TRE (trauma released exercises), tremoring,
  • How tremors are not something to be feared – they are our body’s way of responding to stress
  • How using some of the MELT tools like the mini balls can help the stuck stress in our body release
  • Simple tools to practice self care

Speaking of body care…

I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with friends over the last six months that revolve around peeing while sneezing, coughing, or doing any high impact movements. One friend said when she walks too much her insides feel like they are dropping out and another has to be close to a bathroom at all times. Every time I tell them the same thing: you’ve got to get the Tighten Your Tinkler program.

You may remember my delightful conversation with the Tighten Your Tinkler girls, Jenn Lormand and Christina Walsh which was full of laughter about a heavy subject, pelvic floor health. I’ve personally gone through the program and am pleased to report I don’t have to stop and cross my legs when I sneeze anymore and even my nighttime bathroom trips have reduced. Look, I consider this an all-nighter! My nagging lower back issue is significantly better as well thanks to the program and tools they provided.

If you deal with any of these issues or more serious ones like prolapse, discomfort during or after intimacy, or need to get everything back in place after a hysterectomy, this program is for you. We want you to take back control of your body and regain your confidence. Jenn and Christina are the women you want in your corner and they’ve generously offered $50 off using the code GRACEDHEALTH. If you haven’t listened to our episodes, check them out below. As a bonus, this program is FSA and HSA eligible. Enroll here and use GRACEDHEALTH for $50 off.
