The power and importance of a fitness community (even during COVID)

I consider myself an introvert, but after these last six months of shutdown/lockdown/quarantine, I admit: I miss people.

As a fitness professional, our gyms and fitness communities have experienced varying but significant changes over the last several months. Some are still closed; some are open with restrictions; some are open with gym floor only but no classes; but few look the same as they did a year ago.

Today’s guest, Kyle Wood, is a leader in the fitness industry. He not only educates fitnesses professionals but also provides ideas for running boot camps (see below for links). I reached out to Kyle to chat about this changing dynamic to help us find our “new normal.” I quickly discovered Kyle likes taking conversations beyond the surface level, which I am always up for. Even though we talk shop a little, you’ll be able to come up with some ways to connect to your people, whether that’s virtually, in person or a combination of both.

We discuss:

  • Shifting from fitness looks-based marketing to more positive aspects
  • How shaming doesn’t create health changes
  • Unique ideas to create community without being able to high five or work out together
  • The power of high-fives
  • Creating a safe space to share struggles
  • Keeping perspective
  • What to expect in the fitness industry when things open up
  • Kyle’s one wish as a trainer for his clients
  • What “taking care of myself” looks like
