In the latest episode of our podcast, we were privileged to host Leslie Schilling, author of the book Feed Yourself. Leslie’s insightful work challenges diet culture norms and encourages us to regain trust in our bodies’ inherent wisdom over external devices. She discusses how diet culture often begins its influence in our toddler years, even by well-intentioned caregivers and educators, leading to a disconnection from our body’s natural wisdom.

Schilling’s personal journey of reconnecting with her body’s wisdom, overcoming her struggle with food, and learning to trust her body again is inspiring. Her story reminds us of the importance of extending grace to ourselves in our journey with food. Grace, as Leslie describes, is vital to the process of reestablishing trust in our bodies, a process that involves understanding and embracing our body’s innate wisdom.

In the world of social media, diet culture finds a fertile ground to propagate. Schilling warns about the detrimental effects of social media on body image and diet culture. The constant exposure to potentially harmful messages requires setting boundaries and implementing protective measures to safeguard mental health.

One of the powerful concepts Schilling introduces in this episode is neutralizing the concept of food. She emphasizes the importance of removing the hierarchy imposed by diet culture and viewing food as emotionally neutral. She encourages listeners to trust themselves and their children to make the best food decisions. This process can be slow and require time, but it is a crucial step in breaking free from diet culture’s grip.

Schilling’s book, Feed Yourself, serves as a guide for everyone to practice grace and embrace mistakes when it comes to food. Her aim is to inspire individuals to start a journey of reclaiming trust in their bodies.

This episode is a powerful call to action to reclaim trust in our bodies and dismantle the harmful norms of diet culture. Schilling’s insights offer a refreshing perspective on nutrition and body trust, paving the way for a healthier relationship with food and our bodies.
