I have a lot of dusty clothes from dormant use over the past year. Granted, my job doesn’t require me to wear professional attire, but I have clothes that are begging to be taken to a restaurant. I know we are not in the clear, but as people are getting vaccinated and/or developing antibodies, things are starting to open back up. That’s why I wanted to have a little fun today and speak with MEL of Polished Professionals.

I have a lot of dusty clothes from basically dormant use over the past year.

MEL is a native Houstonian, wife, lawyer, small business entrepreneur and a woman dedicated to working for pretty shoes.

We discuss:

  • How “passable” work clothing attire has changed over the past year
  • The standard of men vs. women during online work
  • The soft skills we don’t learn in formal education
  • How to navigate our closet as we reenter the world after covid quarantine
  • MELS’s favorite resource for what to do with clothes she no longer uses
  • Colors to incorporate in your wardrobe and/or accessories
  • Appropriate times and ways to wear athleisure
  • The value of purging
  • The trick to seeing what you like and lack in your closet

About MEL

MEL is a native Houstonian, wife, lawyer, small business entrepreneur and a woman dedicated to working for pretty shoes.

She was raised in south Houston, Texas. I grew up in a dance studio and loved every minute of it.

MEL is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.  After college, she attended the University of Texas School of Law.  She received Etiquette Consulting Certification from the Etiquette Institute of St. Louis. Most recently, she received my MBA from University of Texas McCombs School of Business.

The goal of this site to give confidence to all working women to be a polished professional. MEL wants you to be ready to look the part whether it’s business casual, business, or formal attire. There are rules about how you should look and act at work (and in general) as a professional.  Some of these rules are written and some unwritten and it’s hard to figure it out on your own.  MEL has worked in businesses that are formal business attire (suits every day), business casual (collared shirts, no jeans) and very casual (yoga pant casual).  She has worked in hierarchical organizations where title and seniority were of utmost importance and more collaborative environments where titles and office sizes were all the same. It’s a lot to navigate and unfortunately classes like personal style, modern manners, work politics savvy or professional poise were not available at my college course load.
